Drawing inspiration from the intricate networks of neurons, Nexus Medical Center reimagines a microhospital in Ankeny, Iowa, as a system of connectivity, adaptability, and growth. Mirroring neural signal transmission and its plasticity, the facility is designed to nurture intuitive interaction and movement among patients, families, and staff. Each department functions as a vital branch, converging at a central two-story atrium that serves as the heart of the hospital.
The atrium anchors the hospital as a community hub, integrating reception, waiting, and relaxation spaces. Adjacent dining areas and access to outdoor walking trails and patios extend opportunities for social interaction and mental restoration. By prioritizing staff well-being and intuitive navigation, the design fosters a cohesive environment that supports healing, resilience, and connection.
